P‐71: Simulation and Experimental Study on Light Leakage in ADS Mode LCDs

Abstract: In this paper, we discuss about the light leakage mechanism in the dark state of ADS mode LCDs. Based on the stress-optic law,we analyzed the phenomenon through several experiments and simulations. We have concluded that the main reason of the light leakage is the combined effect of the retardations from the stressed glass and the liquid crystal layer.

“…For IPS/FFS/ADS mode, John Z. Liang and others thought the light leakage was caused by liquid crystal's orientation [2]. Our team did some simulation before and thought the main cause of light leakage was the combination of glass retardation induced by internal stress in the panel and ADS mode [3]. In this paper, we proposed several effective methods to decrease light leakage at dark state and the results matched our thought very well.…”

“…The light leakage of ADS at dark state has been widely studied [4][5][6][7][8], when ADS LCD panel receives some external and internal stress, the light leakage occurs. And the main reason is the combined effect of the phase retardations from the stressed glass and the LC layer.…”

“…[1][2][3]. But, owing to the homogeneous alignment liquid crystal(LC), ADS mode is sensitive to external stress [4][5][6][7] and is easier to occur light leakage at dark state. Thus, the applications of ADS in large size products of which the deformation is inevitable and difficult to control, and the applications of ADS in the products which are designed to be deformed such as curved panel are limited.…”

“…For conventional transmissive LCD,the backlight is located below the module and the light emitted by LEDs is converted into a uniform surface light source by LGP (Light guide plate) and optical films。Due to the type of products, such as front light and transparent display, there is no backlight, so the light can only enter the display module from the side [1] . LEDs has a certain luminous angle, therefore, uniform side-in light source cannot be obtained directly.…”
