P2Y 2 deficiency impacts adult neurogenesis and related forebrain functions

Abstract: In the brain, generation of new neurons throughout life, the adult neurogenesis, has important functional aspects. Adult neurogenesis is a multistep process covering proliferation of neuronal stem/precursor cells (NPCs), migration of neuroblasts, differentiation into mature neurons, and integration into pre-existing neuronal networks. Moreover, neurogenesis is heterogeneous among mammals depending on species and age. 1 Under normal physiological conditions, adult neurogenesis takes place in specific regions of… Show more

“…Thus, purine and pyrimidine-analogues could modulate fast and long-lasting effects of temporo-ammonic transmission via these receptors. This is consistent with our earlier study showing a role of P2Y 2 in p -Akt expression and spatial working memory [ 51 ]. Moreover, ATP analogs biphasically modulate evoked glutamate release from rat hippocampal nerve terminals, the facilitation being mediated by P2X1, P2X2, and P2X3, and the inhibition by P2Y 1 , P2Y 2 , and or P2Y 4 [ 45 ].…”

“…The precise mechanisms through which P2Y12R-mediated effects act on the developing neuronal networks and adult cytoarchitecture should be investigated in further studies. Our observations are also supported by earlier studies that have implicated purinergic signaling in regulation of neurogenesis, although these results were mainly restricted to adult neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus and olfactory bulb (Ali et al, 2021;Stefani et al, 2018). Such mechanisms could also be important for development of complex pathological states such as seizure-induced adult neurogenesis (Mo et al, 2019).…”
