P852 Introduction of Entamoeba histolytica serology testing in the management of inflammatory bowel disease patients at University Hospitals of Leicester, UK

Abstract: Background Amoebic colitis can mimic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in clinical presentation, endoscopic and (to some extent) histological findings. Four patients with amoebic colitis were misdiagnosed with IBD or an IBD flare at University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL), UK in 2018. This prompted a change in practise in our department and we began screening for Entamoeba histolytica in patients with newly-diagnosed IBD, a flare or those being considered for biologics. We analysed cases of po… Show more

“…The current research revealed the correlation between prevalence of E.histolytica and blood groups .The data were showed highest percentage of infection (40%) in B and lowest percentage (14.6%) in AB blood group Table(3) Serum concentration of IL-34 Serum concentration of IL-34 was recorded in patient (627.0 ± 117.147) when compared with control serum concentration level (203.6 ± 157.351), whereas there was nonsigni cant difference between serum level of this cytokine while Serum concentration of IL-38 was recorded in patient…”

“…E.histolytica is protozoan single-celled parasite affects principle two main organ systems in human body: colon and liver and the causative organism of amoebiasis which is Infection of parasites widespread in developed countries and low socio-economic status populations living in congested localities with poor sanitation [2] . Amoebic colitis can mimic IBD in clinical presentation, endoscopic and to some extent histological nding, because similarity in symptoms and endoscopy results between in ammatory bowel disease and Entamoeba histolytica therefor there are several cases that diagnosed as IBD even though suffers from E.histolytica [3] . Amoebic colitis occur as results of ingestion of the cysts of parasite from food or water contaminated with feces, after that the cysts are digested in intestinal lumen releasing trophozoite [2] .…”
