Paleoliquefaction features on Tenerife (Canary Islands) in Holocene sand deposits

Abstract: On Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands, a series of clastic dikes and tubular vents is attributed to liquefaction of sediments during a high-intensity paleoeatihquake. Geotechnical, geological, tectonic, and mineralogical investigations have been can-ied out to identifY the soil composition and structure, as well as the geological processes operating in the area. Geochronological analysis has indicated an age ranging from 10,081 ±933 to 3490±473 years BP for the liquefaction features. The area in which these l… Show more

“…Such an experimental set‐up is a good analogue for many of the environments where sand injectites occur, in particular those where thin silt, silty‐sand or finer sand layers are present between thicker coarser cleaner sands (e.g. Netoff, 2002; González de Vallejo et al. , 2005; Fernandes et al.…”

“…Rapid sedimentation was followed by liquefaction and overpressuring of fluidized sediments (Moretti and Sabato 2007). Cylindrical, elliptical, and funnel-shaped pipes and sediment injections have been described in outcrop and attributed to water table fluctuations (Massari et al 2001;Netoff and Shroba 2001) as well as seismic shocks (Plint 1983;González de Vallejo et al 2005).…”

“…However, as volcanic and tectonic earthquakes are common on the Canary Islands (e.g. Mezcua et al 1992;González de Vallejo et al 2005), seismic acceleration due to a volcanic or tectonic earthquake could have been the trigger of the TDA.…”
