The tectonic evolution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is characterized by the successive accretion of lithospheric blocks, leading to different interpretations about the polarity of subductions during the Paleozoic, the number of microplates and oceanic basins and the timing of tectonic events. This is especially the case in the Tien Shan area.In this paper, we propose new structural maps and cross-sections of Middle and South Kyrgyz Tien Shan (MTS and STS respectively). These cross-sections highlight an overall dextral strike-slip shear zone in the MTS at the crustal scale and a North verging structure in the STS. These structures are Carboniferous in age and sealed by a late Carboniferous conglomerate, later overlain by Mesozoic and Cenozoic deposits. The STS exhibits two deformation phases: (1) a top-to-the-South normal shearing that can be related to subduction or exhumation dynamics and (2) a top to the North nappe stacking that we link to the late Paleozoic collisional events between the MTS and the Tarim block.We propose a new interpretation of the tectonic evolution of the Kyrgyz Tien Shan during the Late Paleozoic collision. This model involves a partitioned collisional deformation in Late Carboniferous times, with an orthogonal collision to the south, between the Tarim and MTS, and a strike-slip regime to the north along a dextral E-W zone located between the MTS and the North Tien-Shan/ Kazakh platform, the so-called Nikolaev Line. The docking of the large Tarim Craton against the CAOB corresponds to a collision phase, which ended the longlived Paleozoic subduction history in the CAOB and was followed in the TS region by intense strike-slip deformation during the Permian.

Based on new structural and petrological investigations, we present two crustal-scale cross-sections of the Kyrgyz South Tien Shan, and correlations of main faults and units between Kyrgyzstan and China. The overall structure corresponds to a doubly-vergent mountain belt. The Kyrgyz and Chinese areas exhibit identical structural and metamorphic histories. To the west, the Atbashi Range comprises high-pressure oceanic and continental units stacked by north-verging thrusts above a low metamorphic accretionary prism. High-pressure (HP) gneisses are bound to their south by a south-dipping detachment exhibiting mantle relicts. The high-pressure oceanic and continental units underwent similar pressure-temperature (P -T ) paths with peak conditions of around 500 8C-20 kbar, followed by rapid exhumation. The overall south-dipping structure and kinematics indicate a south-dipping subduction of the Central Tien Shan Ocean at 320-310 Ma, ending with the docking of the Tarim block to the Kazakh continent. To the east, the Pobeda Massif shows a narrow push-up structure. A major north-vergent thrust exhumes deep-crustal-level granulites, constituting the highest summits, which were thrust towards the north onto low-grade Devonian-Carboniferous schists. The southern part of South Tien Shan is made up of a south-verging thrust stack that formed later during ongoing convergence, reactivated throughout post-30 Ma phases. Downloaded from Fig. 2. The Chinese Western Tianshan terrane is a well‐known ultrahigh‐pressure (UHP) metamorphic belt that mainly consists of subducted oceanic crustal materials. While two uplift stages have been recognized, the early exhumation history has not been fully constrained. We conducted U–Th–Pb and trace element microanalysis of titanite as well as zircon from UHP eclogites. Apart from several inclusions in garnet, three types of retrograde titanite have been identified based on their petrographic occurrences: (a) in matrix enclosing relict rutile; (b) as coarse‐grained coronas around garnet; and (c) in veins coexisting with epidote and/or apatite. The three types of titanite are homogeneous in chemical composition, low in Al, enriched in middle rare earth elements (REEs), and depleted in light REEs and heavy REEs, suggesting their growth during retrograde decompression. Sensitive high‐resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) and LA‐ICP‐MS U–Pb dating of titanite from four samples, regardless of their textural occurrences, gave consistent ages of c. 306 Ma. Phase equilibria modelling and Zr‐in‐titanite thermometry indicate that titanite replaced rutile at ~14 kbar and ~570°C, following a nearly isothermal decompression from the UHP peak conditions of 30 kbar and 550–570°C. SHRIMP zircon U–Pb dating yields two age groups: c. 320 Ma and c. 305 Ma. The former is generally interpreted to be the age of UHP stage. The latter, overlapping the titanite ages, represents the timing of titanite growth during exhumation. Thus, we estimate that the near‐isothermal exhumation from the UHP peak conditions to the epidote–amphibolite facies retrogression (14 kbar) lasted c. 15 Ma, corresponding to an average exhumation rate of 3.4 ± 2.5 mm/yr (2σ). This exhumation rate lies within the range of oceanic LT‐HP belts in the absence of continental subduction, suggesting a similar slab exhumation mechanism that operates in the UHP regime. The consistent retrograde metamorphic ages recorded by titanite from different localities, and the general agreement among P–T paths in the adjacent area, suggest that the UHP unit of Western Tianshan metamorphic belt was likely exhumed as a coherent unit.
