Palmitoleic acid (16:1n7) increases oxygen consumption, fatty acid oxidation and ATP content in white adipocytes

Abstract: BackgroundWe have recently demonstrated that palmitoleic acid (16:1n7) increases lipolysis, glucose uptake and glucose utilization for energy production in white adipose cells. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that palmitoleic acid modulates bioenergetic activity in white adipocytes.MethodsFor this, 3 T3-L1 pre-adipocytes were differentiated into mature adipocytes in the presence (or absence) of palmitic (16:0) or palmitoleic (16:1n7) acid at 100 or 200 μM. The following parameters were evaluated… Show more

“…Chytrids contained high proportions of MUFA, including 16:1(n−7), 18:1(n−7) and 18:1(n−9), which are common also in other fungi (Akinwole et al, 2014;Arce Funck et al, 2015). As MUFA are major substrates for β-oxidation (Bell et al, 2002;Cruz et al, 2018), they might be used by chytrid zoospores as endogenous lipid reserves to fuel swimming, as reported for aquatic zoosporic fungi belonging to the phylum Blastocladiomycota (Suberkropp & Cantino 1973;Mills & Cantino, 1977). Chytrid PUFA composition largely reflected that of their respective hosts.…”

“…Recently, more research has revealed that many diseases such as obesity, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, aging, and cardiovascular diseases have a close relationship with mitochondrial function ( Heilbronn et al, 2007 ; Sivitz and Yorek, 2010 ; Jelenik and Roden, 2013 ). Mitochondria are the main site for glycolipid metabolism and oxygen consumption, which are associated with the basal metabolic rate ( Cruz et al, 2018 ). Therefore, improving mitochondrial function of adipocytes may be strategy to prevent obesity and obesity-related metabolic complications.…”

“…Considered a "lipokine" released by WAT, it promotes an increase in insulin sensitivity in muscle (14) and WAT (17,18). Besides, 16:1n7 increased lipolytic and lipogenic activity, as well as oxygen consumption, fatty acid oxidation, and ATP content of 3T3-L1 white adipocytes (19). Furthermore, this fatty acid was associated with exercise-induced cardiac hypertrophy (20) and the anti-inflammatory action on macrophages (21,22).…”
