Palyno-taxonomic study of some members of Malvaceae in Purba Medinipur, West Bengal, India.

Abstract: The Malvaceae is a large family of about 243 genera and 4225 species with medicinal and gardening importance. Palynological observations were carried out of 9 species collected from different localities of Purba Medinipur District during the period of February 2016 to December 2017. The present study reveals the pollen morphological characteristics, especially pollen shape classes like Oblate (1 species), Oblate-spheroidal (4 species), Subprolate (1 species) and Per-oblate (3 species) with diameter ranges betw… Show more

“…Botanists and taxonomists have documented the pollen morphology to clarify the arrangement of flowering plant groups into species rank or even up to variety rank. In plant taxonomic studies, the pollen grain morphological features can be significant because many pollen grain traits are affected by the various strong selective forces concern with a lot of reproductive processes including dispersal, pollination, and germination (Erdtman, ; Maity, Patra, Pal, & Malakar, ; Nowicke & Skvarla, ). While compiling comparative studies of monocot taxa and more natural phylogenetic system of classification (Zavada, ) described the wall structure and aperture of monocot pollen and discussed their evolutionary trends for these characters.…”

“…The most recent ones are those done by Taia & Mahdy (2021) and Taia et al (2023) on the importance of leaf macrocharacters in taxa identification. In fact, if we consider the data obtained from pollen descriptions done by Robyns (1971), Sharma (1993), Salma (2000), Bera et al (2007) and Maity et al (2018) besides this result, the taxa belonging to each family are completely different and must be treated as separate families.…”

“…Malva parviflora L. is a member of the Malvaceae family, which includes at least 243 genera and about 4225 species [1]. It is a popular annual or perennial herb with a decumbent or erect habit and is widely naturalized across Africa, Asia, and Europe.…”
