Pan-European Distribution of White-Nose Syndrome Fungus (Geomyces destructans) Not Associated with Mass Mortality

Abstract: BackgroundThe dramatic mass mortalities amongst hibernating bats in Northeastern America caused by “white nose-syndrome” (WNS) continue to threaten populations of different bat species. The cold-loving fungus, Geomyces destructans, is the most likely causative agent leading to extensive destruction of the skin, particularly the wing membranes. Recent investigations in Europe confirmed the presence of the fungus G. destructans without associated mass mortality in hibernating bats in six countries but its distri… Show more

“…The walls and sediment of hibernacula, for instance, are reservoirs for the fungus (Foley et al, 2011;Linder et al, 2011;Puechmaille et al, 2011). Little is known, however, about how the disease spreads, although spread through physical contact among individuals (Frick et al, 2010;Hallam and McCracken, 2011) and by humans unwittingly transferring the fungus from cave to cave (USFWS, 2009;Turner et al, 2011) is suspected.…”

“…In total, we obtained 218 confirmed WNS occurrences from North America and 20 from Europe (Martínková et al, 2010;Puechmaille et al, 2010Puechmaille et al, , 2011b. These occurrences were resampled into 218 grid cells in North America and 18 in Europe (Fig.…”

“…Another factor may be the relatively poor documentation of distribution of the species across Europe in the data available to us. More information clearly exists, but the key publication by Puechmaille et al (2011b) lacks detail on this point. However, taking into account the different environmental spaces used by P. destructans across the two continents, we suspect that the species in reality has quite a broad climatic potential.…”

“…The pathogen being a causative agent of WNS, P. destructans, has been recorded on bats hibernating underground in several European countries (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, The Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine) [17][18][19][20] [18,20] and WNS itself was confirmed in Europe by histopathological evidence [21]. However, it did not lead to mass mortality in any European country [20].…”
