“…Clinical efficacy and safety studies with pantoprazole (40 mg daily) have consistently shown healing rates for oesophageal erosions of 70–80% following 4 weeks of treatment and of > 80% after 8 weeks. These rates are superior to those obtained with ranitidine, 11–13 and comparable to those for omeprazole 14–16 and lansoprazole 17 ,. 18 Clinical studies have indicated that pantoprazole is effective for the rapid healing of erosive oesophagitis, 19 as well as in relieving symptoms in patients with mild erosive disease 20 ,.…”

“…L30 may be superior to O20 in preventing or reducing meal-induced heartburn symptoms 3 hours after a meal, presumably because of the greater bioavailability and more rapid onset of action of a single dose of L. R20 is comparable to O20 in treating persons with grades 2 to 4 erosive esophagitis (Table 1) [17]. Healing rates of erosive esophagitis are generally comparable between L and O, although there may be a trend for faster symptom relief with L. No difference has been observed in esophagitis healing rates or for rates of symptom relief with P40 and O20 [19]. Equivalence in healing and symptom relief has also been reported for R20 and O20.…”

“…These events are uncommon (approximately 1%) and rarely lead to withdrawal of treatment. Data from numerous clinical trials and clinical experience confirm the short-term adverse effects of PPIs and also of pantoprazole (Fitton and Wiseman 1996; Dupas et al 1998; Richardson et al 1998; Vicari et al 1998). …”
