Papillary adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon associated with psammoma bodies and hyaline globules: report of a case

Abstract: We report a case of papillary adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon with psammoma bodies and intracytoplasmic hyaline globules. The patient was a 59-year-old woman. The tumor showed central ulceration with smooth elevated ridges. Histologically, the tumor was composed of numerous large irregular tubular structures accompanying infolded papillary growth. The tumor cells showed cytoplasmic basophilia and prominent nuclear atypia. Psammomatous-type calcification was scattered in the tumor stroma as well as in the g… Show more

“…This term also distinguishes the tumors in our series from the rare colonic papillary adenocarcinomas associated with psammoma bodies and hyaline globules. 7 Classifying villous adenocarcinomas as a distinct subset of colorectal adenocarcinoma will allow further study of these diagnostically challenging tumors. Special techniques may be found to aid in their diagnosis.…”

“…However, psammoma bodies may originate from necrotic or degenerating tumor cells after a crystal nidus is formed in the lumens of the glands (1,2). Correspondingly, psammoma bodies as well as accompanying hyaline globules seen in some cases of gastric adenocarcinomas were considered as degenerative changes of neoplastic cells by some authors (11). It has been suggested that psammomatous calcification in meningioma and desmoid tumor is a result of direct mineralization of round, whorled collagen bodies, which have been suggested as the precursor lesion of psammoma bodies (27,28).…”

“…papillary serous tumor of the ovary, adenocarcinoma of the endometrium) (9,10). In addition, they can be seen in tumors originating from other organs such as the breast, lung, kidney, pituitary gland, colon (11), and stomach (12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17). Dystrophic calcification is uncommon in gastric cancer and displays either mucin pool diffuse calcifications or psammomatous pattern (17).…”

“…However, we did not find in the present literature data about their occurrence in stromal component of any other organ during the aging process. They were observed, the most frequently, in stroma of pathologic formations, especially tumors (Das et al, 2004;Fausett et al, 2002;Johannessen and Sobrinho-Simoes, 1980;Kawahara et al, 2001;Kubota et al, 1984Kubota et al, , 1985Kubota et al, , 1986Nakayama et al, 1997). Klinck and Winship (1959), in their article, cited Wegelin's opinion that choroid plexus psammoma bodies and in some kind of tumors represent the same phenomenon.…”
