Doppler spread causes a significant performance degradation in fast-fading mobile communication systems. This paper proposes a novel Doppler estimation scheme that uses a damped sinusoid to approximate the autocorrelation of the fading channel. Subsequently, an Autoregressive (AR) model is used for the damped sinusoid and the parameters of the model are related to the Doppler value. The superiority of the proposed estimation method over existing state-of-the-art methods is demonstrated using numerical simulations. The proposed scheme is promising in vehicular communication systems.Index Terms-Doppler spread estimation, OFDM system, fading channel.
