Parametric Study of Automotive Composite Bumper Beams Subjected to Frontal Impacts

Abstract: The parametric study of automotive composite bumper beam subjected to frontal impact is presented and discussed in this paper. The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of steel and composite material on energy absorption of automotive front bumper beam. The front bumper beams made of e-glass/epoxy composite and carbon epoxy composite are studied and characterized by impact modeling using LS-DYNA V971, according to United States New Car Assessment Program (US-NCAP) frontal impact velocity and based on Eur… Show more

“…In an era where computational simulations based on fi nite element modelling (with use of software like LS-DYNA) is very much part of day-to-day operation (Mai Nursherida et al, 2011;Jama et al, 2009;Bhatti et al, 2011) in a structural engineering design offi ce, simple hand calculation methodology remains to be an essential part of the design process. In the preliminary design of a structure (during which an elaborate model of the structure has yet to be developed) simple hand calculation methods enable viable solutions to be identifi ed conveniently.…”
