Parametric variational principle and quadratic programming method for van der Waals force simulation of parallel and cross nanotubes

Abstract: A parametric variational principle for van der Waals force simulation between any two adjacent nonbonded atoms and the corresponding improved quadratic programming method for numerical simulation of mechanical behaviors of carbon nanotubes are developed. Carbon nanotubes are modeled and computed based on molecular structural mechanics model. van der Waals force is simulated by the network of bars (called bar network) with a special nonlinear mechanical constitutive law (called generalized parametric constituti… Show more

“…Interestingly, while approaching the tip, a negative response was observed slightly before the contact point. This response could be explained by the attractive Van der Waals forces that are applied at a long distance in the approach step, thus causing a snap of the AFM tip at the surface . It demonstrates the sensitivity of the pressure sensor to the attractive forces with a high sensitivity since the force was evaluated at 150 pN.…”

“…The SWCNT network and configuration in the PEEU polymer substrate are schematically illustrated in Figure e. The network and configuration dictate the electron transport properties because van der Waals and electrostatic interactions between CNTs are too weak to transfer electrons efficiently. , …”

“…Accordingly, SWCNT and PEEU interaction plays a vital role in the sensing and stretchability properties of the nanocomposite system. Some polymer substrates such as polyvinyl alcohol, ,, thermoplastic polyurethane, polyvinyl carbonate, PDMS, and polyethylene terephthalate were widely used as sensing element substrates which results in different stretchabilities and sensitivities of the sensor. The piezoresistive effect due to mechanical deformation of CNT/polymer composites can be understood in terms of the CNT network configuration, as investigated by many authors. …”

“…An advanced definition would be that Van der Waals are short-range forces that act when surfaces are sufficiently close together, and are due to spontaneous electrical and magnetic polarisations that cause a fluctuating electromagnetic field within the medium and in the gap between the surfaces involved (Debrincat et al [2], Zhang et al [16]). …”
