Parasite diversity and ecology in a model species, the guppy ( Poecilia reticulata ) in Trinidad

Abstract: The guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a model species in ecology and evolution. Many studies have examined effects of predators on guppy behaviour, reproduction, survival strategies, feeding and other life-history traits, but few have studied variation in their parasite diversity. We surveyed parasites of 18 Trinidadian populations of guppy, to provide insight on the geographical mosaic of parasite variability, which may act as a source of natural selection acting on guppies. We found 21 parasite species, includi… Show more

“…Each population average for a given site+year was one data point in these analyses. For % time shoaling ( 22estimates, 4 rivers) [61][62][63][64] and prevalence (107 estimates, 11 rivers) 30,32,33,43,57,65,66 , we used a generalized linear mixed model beta regression with a logit link. For host density (23 estimates, 4 rivers) [67][68][69][70][71] , we used a linear mixed model.…”

“…The interactions between the guppy and its directly transmitted ectoparasites, Gyrodactylus turnbulli and G. bullatarudis, have also received some research attention (Cable and van Oosterhout 2007;Martin and Johnsen 2007;Fraser and Neff 2009;Fraser et al 2010;Gotanda et al 2013;Stephenson et al 2015a, b;Xavier et a. 2015;Mohammed et al 2020), and molecular genetic tools provide new and rare opportunities to investigate parasite response to host social behavior (Konczal et al 2020(Konczal et al , 2021. Gyrodactylid reproduction in the wild is complex, which presents opportunity for future study (Shelkle et al 2012).…”
