Parental adherence to clinical recommendations in an ADHD evaluation clinic

Abstract: The present study examined perceived barriers to parental adherence with child psychological assessment recommendations. Eighty caregivers of children referred to an attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) evaluation clinic completed a telephone interview 4 to 6 weeks after receiving evaluation feedback. Caregivers reported adherence to 81.5% of recommendations and were equally likely to engage in self-help recommendations (i.e., information on ADHD) and those for professional-nonpsychological services… Show more

“…Although there is evidence that treatment can improve patient outcomes, ADHD requires additional familial responsibilities including scheduling multiple follow-up appointments and collecting regular assessments from teachers. This is a large burden for many families, and many patients are unable to follow recommendations for appointment scheduling or returning questionnaires (Dreyer et al, 2010;Gardner et al, 2004). Despite the importance of symptom questionnaires for tracking the response to treatment, many providers continue to refill medications and adjust treatments without receiving these measures in follow-up.…”

“…On the other hand, even though psychosocial interventions are advocated as a first-line of treatment for preschoolers with ADHD [18,19], poor attendance and compliance with parent training sessions may interfere with effectiveness of the intervention [20,21]. Compliance with psychosocial intervention recommendations was reported to be lower (58 %) than for medication consultation (78 %) in another study of 80 children between the ages of 5 and 13 years [22]. Age of the children did not predict adherence to different types of treatment recommendations (including psychologic services and medication consultation) in a sample of 93 children between the ages of 4 and 12 years [23].…”
