Parental attachment, self‐control, and depressive symptoms in Chinese and Italian adolescents: Test of a mediation model

Abstract: The current study investigated the relationship between parental attachment and depressive symptoms as well as the mediating effect of self-control in two different cultures. “…Our findings showed the insecure attachment patterns in the adolescents with clinical manifestation of depressive disorders, comparing to the healthy controls. These results, as expected, confirm the findings of correlation between insecure attachment and depression in previous studies of adolescents [22][23][24][25][26] as well as in studies of adults 10 . Small number of studies dealt with depressive disorder among adolescents 22 .…”

“…All items were reverse scored to compute a composite score such that higher scores indicate higher levels of parental attachment. This scale has shown good reliability and construct validity in several Chinese adolescent samples (Li, Delvecchio, Lis, Nie, & Di Riso, 2015; Song, Thompson, & Ferrer, 2009). In this sample, the scale demonstrated good internal consistency (α = .88).…”

“…Indeed, there is initial evidence to suggest that self‐control is negatively associated with the development of internalizing problems in Chinese children (Chen, Zhang, et al, ). However, most of the previous studies of self‐control in Chinese children have been cross‐sectional in design (e.g., Chen et al, ; Li, Delvecchio, Lis, Nie, & Di Riso, ). Moreover, the few longitudinal studies have been limited to two time points and did not attempt to control for stability effects or concurrent links among variables (e.g., Chen, Zhang, et al, ).…”
