We investigate how perceived parents' performance in entrepreneurship (PPE) affects the entrepreneurial career intentions of offspring. We argue that while perceived PPE enhances offspring's perceived entrepreneurial desirability and feasibility because of exposure mechanisms, it inhibits the translation of both desirability and feasibility perceptions into entrepreneurial career intentions due to upward social comparison mechanisms. Thus, perceived PPE acts as a double-edged sword for the intergenerational transmission of entrepreneurship. Our predictions are tested and confirmed on a sample of 21,895 individuals from 33 countries. This study advances the literature on intergenerational transmission of entrepreneurship by providing a foundation for understanding the social psychological conditions necessary for such transmission to occur.

This study examines the factors that shape calling orientations within the Indian context.Based on the narratives of 72 junior doctors and medical interns, it is found that participants identify with harbouring a calling both prior and subsequent to occupational entry. Although factors such as self-recognition of talent and sensemaking of work as destiny play a role, familial communication is found to be particularly influential in the formation of a calling outlook. A relational view of callings associated with generativity and family legacy is thus highlighted. The study additionally compares the career stories of individuals who do (n=29) and those who do not (n=43) frame their occupation as a calling. Participants with a calling orientation are found to have a strong affective attachment to the profession, further influenced by familial communication and value internalization. The findings also demonstrate that the calling experience is malleable and can evolve through work/life experiences.

ResumoEste trabalho analisa os estilos educativos parentais percebidos pelos jovens e os seus níveis de exploração vocacional, atendendo aos referenciais conceptuais da teoria da construção da carreira e à investigação prévia sobre a relação entre a infl uência parental e o desenvolvimento vocacional. Participam 296 estudantes portugueses, 109 (36,82%) do sexo feminino e 187 (63,18%) do sexo masculino, com uma idade média de 17,03 anos (DP = 1,45; Min = 14; Max = 23), que preencheram a Escala de Exploração Vocacional e o Questionário de Estilos Educativos Parentais. Verifi caram--se diferenças na percepção do estilo educativo parental e na exploração vocacional em função de variáveis sociodemográfi cas, e uma associação positiva signifi cativa entre a exigência e as crenças e os comportamentos de exploração vocacional. AbstractThis work analyzes the parental educational styles perceived by youth and their level of vocational exploration, considering the career construction theory and previous research on the relationship between parental infl uence processes and vocational development.
