Parents’ Report of Sensory Responsiveness and Temperament in Preterm Infants

Abstract: This study supports the findings of others that preterm infants have mild problems in sensory responsiveness and temperament. Correlational results do not support a definitive relationship between parents' reports of their infants' sensory responsiveness and developmental function.

“…[1][2][3][4] Because sensory experience is the basis for much of learning in infancy, sensory problems that affect preterm infants may contribute to their high incidence of later developmental disorders. Although hearing and vision impairments are well-documented sensory outcomes of prematurity, abnormalities in sensory processing (the organisation of sensation for use) 5 and sensory reactivity (an observable and immediate modulation of behaviour in response to a sensory stimulus) [6][7][8] are more difficult to identify and characterise.…”

“…Vários estudos têm mostrado que os bebés prematuros apresentam problemas na responsividade sensorial e no temperamento (CaseSmith, Butcher & Reed, 1998 (Thompson & Khot, 1985), mas à custa de que consequências, poderia perguntar-se? Os procedimentos a que são sujeitos os bebés nas UCI podem ser extremamente stressantes (Field, 1990a(Field, , 1990b.…”

“…Preparing the infant for impending touch also promotes trust and supports the child's emerging sense of self and ultimate behavioural competency [21]. Enduring continual approaches that cause sudden, painful or startling responses, may lead to hypo-responsive infant behaviours that are commonly seen in graduates of the NICU, and are possibly a further factor influencing behavioural outcomes [22].…”
