Partial priapism secondary to tamsulosin: a case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Partial priapism is also called partial segmental thrombosis of the corpus cavernosum. It is a rare pathology, and its aetiology, physiopathology and treatment are still not completely understood. To our knowledge, partial priapism due to alpha blockers has not been reported previously in the literature. In this study, a successfully treated case of partial priapism occurring after the usage of alpha blocker is presented and discussed in light of the related literature.

“…In addition to a painful mass in the perineum, which was how the condition presented in all cases, some of the patients experienced erectile dysfunction, and a few complained about dysuria or a decrease in the calibre of the urinary stream. IPT has been associated with haematological diseases such as homocysteinaemia [1], sickle cell disease [2] and congenital spherocytosis [3], cocaine [4] and marijuana abuse [2], a prior history of priapism [2,5], (vigorous or prolonged) sexual activity [2,[4][5][6][7][8][9][10], tamsulosin [11], bicycle riding [12][13][14][15] and aeroplane flight [12]. IPT is always located in the proximal part of the CC while the distal CC remains flaccid.…”

“…14,15 There is also a third case of tamsulosin associated with partial priapism, in which a proximal corpora thrombosis was identified. 8 The case we report is the fourth published. In a recent multicenter trial conducted to study the influence of the drug on sexual function, daily tamsulosin (0.4 mg) was compared with placebo and alfuzosin (7.5 mg), but priapism did not occur in any of the groups, substantiating the low incidence of this adverse event.…”
