Participatory scenario development for integrated assessment of nutrient flows in a Catalan river catchment

Abstract: Abstract. Rivers in developed regions are under significant stress due to nutrient enrichment generated mainly by human activities. Excess nitrogen and phosphorus emissions are the product of complex dynamic systems influenced by various factors such as demographic, socio-economic and technological development. Using a Catalan river catchment, La Tordera (North-East of Spain), as a case study of an integrated and interdisciplinary environmental assessment of nutrient flows, we present and discuss the developme… Show more

“…Mean annual rainfall ranges from 1000 mm in the mountains to 600 mm on the coast (Rovira and Batalla ). 77% of the catchment is forested, 16% has crop coverage (in the alluvial deposits) and 7% is covered by urban and industrial areas (Caille et al ). Mean annual discharge is around 4 m 3 s −1 , but as a Mediterranean river the annual hydrology is highly variable (Rovira and Batalla ).…”

“…With the exception of a small dam in the headwaters, there are no other reservoirs along this river. The 77% of the catchment is forested (mainly composed of evergreen oak forest and some plantations of black poplar and plane tree at the floodplain) and the remaining 16% and 7% are crops (in the alluvial deposits) and urbanindustrial areas, respectively (Rovira & Batalla, 2006;Caille et al, 2007). Population density ranged from less that 100 (headwaters) to 20 000 inhab./km 2 (urban zones).…”
