Parturition and pelvic changes

Abstract: A detailed analysis of the female bony pelvis in relation to parity status was made. A total of 198 complete pelves were inspected for five features considered to be associated with pregnancy and parturition. During final analysis two features were eliminated. Three remaining features - dorsal pubic pitting, pre-auricular grooves, and grooves located at the site of interosseous ligament insertion were found to be significantly related to partirution. Other findings of interest were: (1) pits and grooves acquir… Show more

“…As compared with Kelly (1979), our accuracy of prediction for the sexing functions is slightly higher, at least as regards our base sample (92.7 vs. 90.0%). This might be accounted for by the additional variable in our study (notch position) andor the discriminant function method.…”

“…Like Kelly (1979) and Genoves (19591, we recognize the difficulties in using the fragile ischial spine as a n osteometric point. However, the alternative use of the poorly defined base of the spine consistently posed a greater operational problem than did extrapolating the position of the tip of the spine, where this was necessary.…”

“…A further follow-up to Houghton on the pitting in the pre-auricular groove was the paper by Kelley (1979), working on a sample of 198 females from the HamannTodd collection. However, the certification of parity in this collection was apparently not always based on medical records, but often carried out after death with an estimation of parity based on physiology.…”
