It was assumed in this case of microcytic hypochromic anaemia that pre-existing anaemia of iron deficiency and anaemia of inflammation could be present due to inflammatory bowel disease (Weiss and Gasche 2010) and that these conditions were subsequently worsened by lymphoma. Lymphoma patients without bone marrow infiltration (which was not examined) may have anaemia of inflammation due to excessive release of cytokines such as IL-6 (Tisi et al 2014).…”
