Pathogenesis of parodontitis in rheumatic diseases

Abstract: Inflammatory periodontal disease (PD) is a common disease worldwide that has a primarily bacterial aetiology and is characterized by dysregulation of the host inflammatory response. The degree of inflammation varies among individuals with PD independently of the degree of bacterial infection, suggesting that alteration of the immune function may substantially contribute to its extent. Factors such as smoking, education, and body mass index (BMI) are discussed as potential risk factors for PD. Most PD patients … Show more

“…However, the increasing age of patients is highly associated with the contract of RA and edentulism. Moreover, the growing evidence suggests an association between periodontal disease and systemic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis [7]. Therefore, patients suffering from RA, show characteristics that confirm to lots of patients daily locating our hospital.…”

“…Both the amount and virulence of the microorganisms and the resistance factors of the host (risk factors and immune status) are crucial for the initiation and progression of the periodontal destruction [3]. Besides detailed concepts about microbiological, molecular, and cellular mechanisms, which determine the strength and balance of the cellular and humoral host response in tissues, it became apparent that a complex and primarily endogenous periodontal microflora is responsible for disease initiation and progression.…”

“…From an etiologic and pathogenetic point of view, risk factors other than pathogenic bacteria and oral hygiene play a crucial role. These risk factors can influence every sub-step of the pathogenesis, and this explains the individually different manifestations of the disease [3]. The individual risk factors such as age, gender, body mass, and genetic factors (IL-1β polymorphism and HLA gene associations) are the focus of attention.…”
