Pathological assessment of the nervous and male reproductive systems of rat offspring exposed maternally to acrylamide during the gestation and lactation periods - a preliminary study

Abstract: -To evaluate the developmental effects of exposure to acrylamide (ACR) on the nervous and male reproductive systems, pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were given ACR at 0, 50, 100 or 200 ppm in the drinking water from gestational day 10 to postnatal day 21 and histopathological assessment of offspring was performed at weaning and postnatal week 11. Neurotoxicity was quantitatively assessed with reference to nerve fiber density, percentages of degenerated and small caliber axons in the sciatic nerves, and numbers of… Show more

“…However, rosemary caused significant upregulation of EGFR expression (G-I) (immunostaining 200×, insets x. Graphs 5, 6 & 7 showing mean area % of caspase-3, iNOS and EGFR immunostaining respectively. (Takahashi et al, 2008;Abd El-Mottaleb and Rashed, 2008) previously reported vascular congestion of liver, kidney and brain of acrylamide treated animals. This may be attributed to the toxic effect of acrylamide stimulating the release of chemical mediators following tissue damage (Hendry et al, 1990).…”

“…Acrylamide was reported to cause exfoliation of germ cells with accumulation of cell debris in the lumina of seminiferous tubules of testis (Takahashi et al, 2008;Mazen and Elnegris, 2013). This was suggested to be due to a primary effect of acrylamide on intercellular junctions.…”

“…per day. Takahashi et al (2008) evaluate the developmental effects of exposure to AA on the nervous and male reproductive system using pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats given AA at 0, 50, 100 or 200 mg/L in the drinking water from GD10 to PND21 and histopathological assessment of offspring was performed at weaning and postnatal week 11. Mean daily intake of AA by dams during the gestation and lactation periods was 0, 9.9, 17 and 22 mg/kg b.w.…”

“…Potato chips are common parts of children's menus in fast food restaurants all over the world and these familiar foods are reported to contain high levels of toxic and carcinogenic byproducts which are not found in the uncooked foods [1][2][3] . Among these components are acrylamide (ACR).…”

“…The diameter of the optic tract fibers of all sizes is affected by ACR intoxication.Following a herd of cattle was accidentally exposed to ACR and N-methyloacrylamide, Godin et al [3] found abnormal papillary light reflexes in one cow. Ophthamoscopic examination showed progressive retinal degeneration and degenerative changes in the optic nerves head.…”
