Patient‐centered prioritization of bladder cancer research

Abstract: Patient engagement is needed to identify high-priority research questions in oncology. The BCAN PSN provides a successful example of an engagement infrastructure for annual research prioritization in bladder cancer. The creation of an engagement network sets the groundwork for additional phases of engagement, including design, conduct, and dissemination. Cancer 2018. © 2018 American Cancer Society.

“…For example, the EORTC risk calculator forms the basis of the European Association of Urology NMIBC guidelines, and the CUETO calculator predicts risks after BCG treatment 10 . However, uptake of these tools has been disappointingly low, and studies incorporating the perspectives of urologists and patients with NMIBC suggest there is a need to enhance the existing tools to broaden applicability and usability 6,7 . The EORTC and CUETO risk calculators are based on pooled data sets of patients from European clinical trials and may not accurately reflect non‐European patients or real‐world settings.…”

“…Both patients and urologists have called for research into detailed prediction tools for NMIBC recurrence and progression. In surveys of patients from the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, research questions pertaining to decision‐making tools and determining the appropriate time frame for radical cystectomy in high‐risk NMIBC were most important to patients with bladder cancer 6 . In a recent qualitative study of urologists by our group, participants endorsed a need for more evidence to improve communication about recurrence and progression risk 7 .…”

“…To some extent, cellular targeting by CQs can be achieved by conjugation with specific moieties, including sugar groups, and by the generation of hybrid molecules, such as CQ-artemisinin. [297][298][299] Grant calls that cover the topic of drug repurposing technology to reprogram immune responses with cell-selectivity and parallel onco-suppression will be beneficial to both basic and translational research. Even though CQ is an established drug against certain conditions, its use in cancer is still in its infancy, as is evident by the clinical trials that have been publicized.…”

“…A recent stakeholder-driven research prioritization study involving bladder cancer patients and caregivers identified the need for more information about urinary diversion choice, cystectomy education, expectations about recovery, and impacts of cystectomy and urinary diversion [12]. Qualitative research using grounded theory approaches can provide these needed insights into common experiences, trajectories and transitions in illness experience [13] for bladder cancer patients undergoing cystectomy.…”
