Patients' perception of DED and its relation with time to diagnosis and quality of life: an international and multilingual survey

Abstract: Findings showed that negative perception of DED, delayed diagnosis and high frequency of treatment use were inter-related, and that all have a negative impact on patients' QoL. The generated language-specific keywords used to describe DED could serve as the basis for a comprehensive QoL questionnaire to be used in clinical settings.

“…Likewise, the results confirm H2 because a longer time to diagnosis is related to lower QL levels. This result is in line with a previous research (Labetoulle et al., ; Vasquez et al., ). Finally, in our study, the type of lupus (systemic or cutaneous) was shown not to be related to the QL in these patients; therefore, we could not accept H3, similar to a previous study (Reis et al., ).…”

“…Therefore, an early diagnosis is associated with a lower impact on the QL in patients with chronic diseases. Unfortunately, it is common for patients with immune diseases to remain undiagnosed for a long time, which is associated with a decrease in the QL of these patients (Batalla et al., ; Labetoulle, Rolando, Baudouin, & Van Setten, ). In the case of lupus, there are few studies that analyse the importance of time to diagnose on the QL (Batalla et al.,).…”

“…Country-specific data on the patient experience of DED are particularly sparse. Nevertheless, a recent cross-sectional survey of 706 patients with DED from five European countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK) provided some insight into regional perspectives 19. In this survey, more patients in France considered DED to be a ‘handicap’ (21%) compared with the overall percentages for all countries (12%, p<0.05).…”

“…Symptoms of DED are of varying severity and were described as stinging, burning or scratchy sensations, foreign-body sensation, increased sensitivity to light, blurred vision, as well as eye fatigue and eye redness. 67 In DED, ocular surface inflammation, paralleled or not by tissue damage, results in changes in nerve structure and altered responses to external mechanical or chemical stimuli. The peripheral and central sensitization results in a pain response to normally non-painful stimuli.…”
