Patients' satisfaction and wound-site complications after radial artery harvesting for coronary artery bypass

Abstract: The aim of the study was to establish patients' satisfaction and the incidence of wound-site complications after radial artery (RA) harvesting for bypass surgery. A telephonic quality of life questionnaire was performed in 306 consecutive patients who had undergone coronary artery bypass grafting with the use of RA with the open technique. A psychometric Likert scale was used to define the degree of patients' satisfaction. The questionnaire concerned arm pain, cosmesis and mobility, sensory and neurological co… Show more

“…In our study for questions regarding: arm pain, arm swelling, mobility and sensory problems median reported values were 5 (on Likert scale 1 to 5), whilst for esthetic satisfaction and general health state median reported values were 4, similar to the results of Arrigoni et al [9]. Each and every variable separately had mean value above 4.…”

“…Arrigoni et al reported on a quality-of-life questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale that included the determination of patient satisfaction with wound cosmesis [31]. However, this scoring system was only a rough evaluation of cosmetic outcomes.…”

“…Patient satisfaction after RA harvest has been more than satisfactory [31]. Wound complications have been few and mild except for the catastrophic problem of forearm flexor muscle necrosis which I believe is a compartment syndrome created by closure of the muscle fascia and is avoided by closing only the deep subcutaneous fascia [32].…”
