Patrimony for Resilience: Evidence from the Forest Agdal in the Moroccan High Atlas Mountains

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Patrimony and resilience appear today as key concepts for understanding the dynamics of systems confronted with natural hazards. Nevertheless, the theoretical comparison between these concepts drawn from different epistemic approaches is lacking. Our aim is to interrelate resilience and patrimony concepts on the basis of a real example: the Agdal, a traditional forest management system in the Moroccan High Atlas. The role played by the Agdal in safeguarding the patterns of forest resource use by vill… Show more

“…Two cases highlight semi-arid rural forests in Morocco: the forest 'agdal' in the High Atlas mountains (mixed holm oak [Quercus ilex], and three species of juniper forests), a customary community-based forest management practice based on limited access to the forest on a temporal basis (Hammi et al 2010, Auclair et al 2011; and the argan (Argania spinosa) forest, a unique inhabited native forest (south-west Morocco) facing the consequences of the sudden success of argan oil in international markets (Simenel et al 2009, Genin and.…”

“…In the case of forests, how does patrimonialization interfere with these characteristics? Some authors have shown that strict endogenous forest patrimonialization may contribute to strengthened socialecological system resilience and adaptability (Auclair et al 2011, Michon 2011. National patrimonial forest management has proved successful in maintaining and reproducing large tracts of high and dense forests over centuries, at least in Europe.…”

“…Transmitting this patrimony from one generation to the next, as well as the values, status, and rights attached to it, constitutes the warrant of economic and social sustainability. In this sense, patrimony relates to resilience, as Auclair et al (2011) have discussed in their analysis of Agdal forests in the Moroccan High Atlas Mountains.…”

“…These complex interactions between past and present are very close to the patrimonial construction of RFs discussed by Auclair et al (2011). They consider managed forest resources in the Moroccan Atlas as elements of patrimony following Ollagnon's (2000) definition of patrimonial management as an adaptive process in time and space of material and immaterial elements by human communities to develop their identity and autonomy.…”
