Patterns of media use in an activity-centric collaborative environment

Abstract: This paper describes a new collaboration technology that is based on the support of lightweight, informally structured, opportunistic activities featuring heterogeneous threads of shared items with dynamic membership. We introduce our design concepts, and we provide a detailed analysis of user behavior during a five month field study. We present the patterns of media use that we observed, using a variety of analytical methods including thread clustering and analysis. Major findings include four patterns of med… Show more

“…Most often, it is used as an expression for means of communication (e.g., [34]), especially in relation to social media. The primary purpose of (social) media is to speed up and increase the likelihood of communication, facilitate coordination of actions, especially with changing interaction partners and finally to allow complex cooperation.…”

“…There is quite a bit of relevant work in activity centric models of collaboration, which have motivated this work [3,8,10,11,12]. For instance, Millen et.…”

“…al. 's ActivityExplorer [11,12] project also attempts to fill a gap somewhere between very ad hoc means of communication, like Email, to more structured collaboration tools which have a greater overhead but are able to deal with more complex collaborations. Although their tool is an excellent collaboration tool, it is different from our approach in that it does not, at least directly, attempt to incorporate identified best practices of a collaboration into similar collaborations that may occur in the future.…”

“…The goal of these systems, however, is typically not to provide detailed information about partners' project-related activities. One exception is ActivityExplorer [14], which provides awareness and a log of document-related activities at the project level.…”
