Academic works have indicated that didactic methods for teaching engineers fail to professionally prepare, despite international efforts to create competent engineering students. Indeed, studies on teaching in engineering in general, particularly in civil engineering, throughout the world are scarce or in their incipient stages, at least in relation and comparison to the material dedicated to the subject by mathematicians. In order to improve teaching and learning in engineering, the aim of this paper was to discuss if certain aspects of the modern technique used in mathematics could be applied to teaching in engineering, more specifically the problem-solving methodology, since engineering teaching lacks a well-developed self-epistemology.

Active Learning Methodologies aims to offer a learning approach that is different from traditional methods. These approaches seek to reconcile the changes that students undergo as a result of the evolution of society and, consequently, changes in the labor market. Problem Based Learning (PBL) presents itself as a form of active methodology that seeks to build student knowledge from the problem solving process. The study aims to apply the PBL in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) discipline of the Environmental Engineering course at Federal University of Triângulo Mineiro. The method was applied in two different classes, which were divided into smaller groups. In order to assess the dynamics of the PBL, anonymous questionnaires were applied to students after the method was finalized. The results showed that 88% of the students considered the PBL adequate to GIS. In addition, 94% of students were satisfied with the score distribution adopted and 70% of students assessed their own performance well. Therefore, the PBL proved to be an efficient methodology to complement the student's learning in GIS. It is recommended that future studies be carried out, varying the time of application and the number of students per group, aiming continuous improvement.

Atualmente, o fácil e rápido acesso à informação vem alterando as formas de se obter conhecimento, principalmente por parte dos estudantes, e tornando mais relevante as habilidades de seleccionar informações úteis e confiáveis, conectá-las e utilizá-las criticamente. Neste cenário de transformações constantes, manter a mesma lógica de ensino antiquada, na qual os alunos são, na maior parte do tempo, ouvintes com pouca interação com os professores, pode constituir um erro, gerando desisteresse e abandono nas salas de aula. Metodologias ativas de ensino, como a técnica de aprendizagem baseada em projetos (Project Based Learning – PBL), que procuram dar ao aluno um papel de maior protagonismo no processo de aprendizagem, apresentam-se como uma alternativa consistente. Essas metodologías estimulam os estudantes a respeitar opiniões diversas e a construir consensos trabalhando em equipe, contribuindo para uma melhoria da qualidade do ensino da engenharia e tecnología. Apessar disso, a inserção do PBL, bem como de outras metodologías ativas, ainda necessita de uma maior divulgação sobre o tema e maiores impulsos para se difundir nas universidades do Brasil. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho avalia a utilização da técnica de aprendizagem baseada em projetos, Project Based Learning (PBL), na disciplina TC 083 – Patologia e reabilitação de estruturas do curso de Engenharia Civil da Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR). Para tal, 5 situações problemas foram idealizadas a partir da experiência profissional do professor Dr. Marcelo Medeiros, o qual supervisionou o trabalho junto a alunos de pós-graduação. Com a aplicação da técnica PBL, verificou-se que os alunos apresentaram maior grau de participação e satisfação, visto que se sentem como se já estivessem no seu exercício profissional como engenheiros. Além disso, os alunos constataram a importancia da base teórica adquirida ao longo da graduação, imprescindível para solucionar situações da prática do Engenheiro Civil, motivando, também, maior interesse pela área de patologia e reabilitação de estruturas.
