Pd26-12 Complications Associated With Transrectal and Transperineal Prostate Mapping Biopsy

Abstract: The 3 groups were similar in age, body mass index, serum prostate specific antigen and total prostate volume. There was no significant difference in pain scores during probe insertion, local anesthetic injection, and transrectal ultrasonography between three groups. Pain during prostate biopsy was significantly lower in group 1 and 2 than group 3. There was no significant difference during prostate biopsy between group 1 and 2. The mean pain score during biopsy was no significant difference between the mean pa… Show more

“…9 An increasing number of studies have been conducted to improve its accuracy by sampling 12, 20, or >20 cores; however, this has resulted in more cases lacking clinical significance and increased risks of bleeding, infection, and other complications. 10,11 The 6-core systematic biopsy is still recommended for patients with PSA >20 ng/ml. 12 Recently, transperineal systematic prostate biopsy (TP) has attracted much more attention.…”

“…Various strategies have been proposed to minimize the risk of infections after PB, varying from antibiotic strategies such as culture-based prophylaxis to pre-biopsy rectal preparation with povidone-iodine reducing the bacterial load. 1,2,8–11 Additionally, technical aspects of PB, such as biopsy core number or biopsy route, might have impact on post-biopsy infection rates.…”

“…Another strategy to reduce post-biopsy infections is transperineal PB, avoiding the rectum, which harbors a higher bacterial load, while maintaining adequate numbers of biopsy cores. 8 Several studies showed that transperineal PB was associated with fewer infectious complications than transrectal PB. 11,24 In fact, therefore, some guidelines currently advise to perform transperineal PB.…”
