What was it like growing up during the Cold War? What can childhood memories tell us about state socialism and its aftermath? How can these intimate memories complicate history and redefine possible futures? These questions are at the heart of the (An)Archive: Childhood, Memory, and the Cold War. This edited collection stems from a collaboration between academics and artists who came together to collectively remember their own experiences of growing up on both sides of the ‘Iron Curtain’. Looking beyond official historical archives, the book gathers memories that have been erased or forgotten, delegitimized or essentialized, or, at best, reinterpreted nostalgically within the dominant frameworks of the East-West divide. And it reassembles and (re)stores these childhood memories in a form of an ‘anarchive’: a site for merging, mixing, connecting, but also juxtaposing personal experiences, public memory, political rhetoric, places, times, and artifacts. These acts and arts of collective remembering tell about possible futures―and the past’s futures―what life during the Cold War might have been but also what it has become. (An)Archive will be of particular interest to scholars in a variety of fields, but particularly to artists, educators, historians, social scientists, and others working with memory methodologies that range from collective biography to oral history, (auto)biography, autoethnography, and archives.

Childhood in formerly socialist countries is often depicted in research as ‘organised’ or ‘uniform’―a perspective we challenge in this paper. Using collective-memory work, we analyse our own childhood memories from the late GDR and memories taken from the memory archive of the Reconnect/Recollect project, focusing on unsupervised times, when institutional access to child supervision was no longer available and adult supervision could not (yet) be guaranteed. With this focus, we broaden existing literature on post/socialist childhood, which mainly focuses on institutionalized settings. Our analysis finds three patterns of unsupervised times present across different memory stories―unsupervised times perceived as freedom and contentment, responsibility, and loneliness. These patterns show that unsupervised times created opportunities for important children’s experiences to take place―from being creative to imitating adults, breaking rules, and building communities with peers and siblings. Additionally, we find many similarities across geopolitical boundaries that break down the stereotypical dichotomies of childhoods between the ‘East’ and the ‘West’.

Jugendliche übernehmen Verantwortung, wenn es um den Schutz vor sexuellen Übergriffen, insbesondere durch Gleichaltrige, geht. Bei jungen Menschen in stationären Einrichtungen der Jugendhilfe wurde in einem Mixed-Methods-Projekt untersucht, wie sie dies tun und welche Unterstützungsmöglichkeiten sich für die pädagogische Praxis bieten. Quantitativ berichteten 121 Jugendliche überwiegend soziale Selbstschutzstrategien in Absprache mit Freund:innen. In qualitativen Interviews wurden Strategien sichtbar, um unter Rückgriff auf Dritte (Bystander) Deutungs-, Handlungs- und Organisationsmacht zu sichern und sich sowie andere zu schützen. Gruppendiskussionen zeigten, dass Eingreifen als ein Prozess verstehbar ist, in dem Bystander sich mit Hürden konfrontiert sehen. Kann keine geeignete Lösung gefunden werden, scheitern diese Prozesse. Jugendliche profitierten von einer pädagogischen Bearbeitung von Schutzthemen und konnten Erwartungen an professionelles und organisationales Handeln formulieren.
