The purpose of the research was to examine (1) whether or not the HOTS instruction was more effective than the LOTS (Lower Order Thinking Skills) instruction in teaching speaking for daily context to the first semester students at English Education department; (2) whether the students who had high self-motivation had better speaking ability than those who had low self-motivation; and (3) whether there was an interaction between teaching strategies and students’ self-motivation. By using a quantitative research with the quasi-experimental type, the data were derived from tests and questionnaires. The results show that (1) HOTS instruction is more effective than the LOTS instruction in teaching speaking for daily context to the first semester students at the English Education Department; (2) the students who have high motivation have better speaking skills than the students who have low motivation; (3) there is an interaction between teaching strategies and motivation in teaching speaking for daily context. It can be concluded that HOTS instruction is an effective strategy in teaching speaking viewed from students’ motivation. The effectiveness of the strategy is affected by students’ motivation.

Pada era sekarang ini, diperlukan inovasi sebuah model dalam pembelajaran sejarah untuk mencapai tujuan yang diinginkan setelah mengikuti pembelajaran sejarah. Salah satu perubahan yang menjadi penciri (karakteristik) Kurikulum 2013 Revisi terletak pada standar proses bahwa pembelajaran harus mampu mengembangkan kemampuan berfikir peserta didik tingkat tinggi atau HOTS (Higher Order Thingking Skill). Tak terkecuali dalam Pembelajaran sejarah, salah satu tujuan yang diinginkan mampu dimiliki oleh peserta didik setelah mengikuti pembelajaran sejarah yaitu kemampuan berfikir historis dari peserta didik tersebut.Salah satu model yang bisa diterapkan dalam pembelajaran sejarah di era sekarang ini untuk menyesuaikan dengan karakteristik Kurikulum 2013 Revisi yaitu pengembangan pembelajaran HOTS adalah model pembelajaran Berbasis Masalah atau yang dikenal dengan sebutan Problem Based Learning. Model pembelajaran ini cocok digunakan dalam pembelajaran sejarah guna mencapai tujuan yang diinginkan untuk mengembangkan kemampuan berfikir historis peserta didik. This paper describes the strategies used in academic supervision in improving Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) learning. This study uses the literature method because the data obtained comes from online and offline print media with content analysis techniques. In the application of HOTS learning, not all teachers are able to carry it out perfectly, for that, coaching and training are needed first. Questioning about the development of educators, of course, cannot be separated from the role of supervisors who have the role and function of fostering teachers and controlling the learning process of students. The things that are done in academic supervision in improving HOTS learning include (1) Creating harmonious relationships, (2) Needs analysis, (3) Developing strategies and media, (4) Teacher performance appraisal, (5) Follow-up, in terms of This will make changes and improvements based on what has been found in the previous assessment.
