Penetration of Singlet Oxygen into Films with Oxygen Permeability Coefficient Close to that of Skin

Abstract: Although its antiviral and antibacterial functions help prevent infection, singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 )-which is generated by the action of light on an endogenous photosensitizer-is cytotoxic. In the present study, we investigated the ability of 1 O 2 -generated by the action of visible light on a photosensitizer-to penetrate skin. We used two polymer films with oxygen permeability coefficients similar to that of skin-i.e. cellulose acetate (CA) and ethyl cellulose (EC). Both films contained 1,3-diphenylisobenzofu… Show more

“…DPBF has a characteristic absorption peak at 418 nm, whereas decomposed DBB does not. Therefore, the generation of 1 O 2 can be qualitatively monitored through the time variation of the absorption peak of DPBF [41,42] . PMMA films containing homogeneously dispersed both DPBF and ICs and those containing only DPBF were prepared to detect 1 O 2 and monitor the photodegradation of DPBF, respectively.…”

“…Therefore, the generation of 1 O 2 can be qualitatively monitored through the time variation of the absorption peak of DPBF. [41,42] PMMA films containing homogeneously dispersed both DPBF and ICs and those containing only DPBF were prepared to detect 1 O 2 and monitor the photodegradation of DPBF, respectively. Moreover, PMMA films containing β-carotene in addition to DPBF and ICs were prepared to estimate the rate of direct photodecomposition of DPBF by UV irradiation and not via the reaction with 1 O 2 .…”

“…The nitrite concentration, singlet oxygen content, and overall oxidative strength of the PTS solution increased with plasma treatment time, implying that ROS and RNS play a role in the antimicrobial effect of the PTS solution. The detection of singlet oxygen in the PTS solution was carried out using the DPBF reagent, which is a yellow-colored reagent that reacts with singlet oxygen to yield a colorless product 38 , 39 . Therefore, lower absorption of the DPBF, when exposed to plasma-treated liquid, reflects a higher amount of singlet oxygen.…”

“…Extracellular Measurement of 1 O 2 Generation: 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran (DPBF) is a popular 1 O 2 trapping-agent. [47] DPBF solution (10 μL, 3 mg mL −1 in ethanol) was added to the mSCCC or mSCCC@SA solution (100 ppm, 0.1 mL). Then, 1 mL PBS solution was added and the absorbance of DPBF solution at 410 nm was recorded at the appointed time.…”
