Objective: This study attempts to review important facts related to the issue of providing housing for those with low incomes. Then the practice of residential transformation is reviewed from the spatial aspect, and what issues need to be carried out so that the transformation does not have a broad impact on residents (sustainable). Finally, the researcher tries to review some of the theories that are commonly used by researchers in reviewing housing and the transformation of the residential space itself. Method: This study uses a review study approach and descriptive explanation. This study involved around 100 reputable journals with a focus on studies of decent and inexpensive housing, and the transformation of residential spaces. The majority of journals are based on Scopus-indexed international journals and national (Indonesian) journals as reputable supporters of the Sinta index. Results: This study found that providing adequate housing for those with low income is on the agenda of all countries, until now they are still trying to reduce the gap because the amount provided has not been able to keep up with population growth rates. It follows that the transformation of public housing is carried out in transitional spaces, it's just that previous studies have not focused on transitional spaces in front of the house. The focus of his study is to produce a transitional typology. Each country has its own unique characteristics so the study of the factors that cause transformation and the choice of typology need to be studied further. Conclusions: The next finding is that there is an idea about providing a transitional space for the benefit of social interaction with an inclusive concept, which is an interesting thing to investigate.

Housing built for low-income communities carries out residential transformation practices. This investigation was carried out based on a review study involving around 56 reputable journals. By the results of the review study, it is known that transition space transformation occurs in all types of space, namely back, side, and front transition spaces. Two (2) points are new to this research. The third novelty of the study in question is that it produces findings: 1) Factors that cause the transformation of the transitional space at the front of the house for low-income people according to indicators of ease of obtaining building materials and availability of construction workers; and 2) Transformation model of transitional space at the front of the house for low-income communities. The use of mixed methods as originality or authenticity as a differentiator in research. Using mixed methods also strengthens future research findings because previous studies have not used the paradigm in question.

The gate is an important component of Peranakan houses in Lasem. They are included in the cultural heritage of Indonesia, and most of them are more than a hundred years old, but still stand firm and lined up neatly adorning the Pecinan area. The purpose of this paper is to provide a different perspective on the existence of the Peranakan houses’ gates that interpreted through the author’s experiences during the fieldwork. The gate embodiment gives a different atmosphere and experience which is not found elsewhere because they are unique and irreplaceable. Unfortunately, preserving these gates become a serious challenge in the modern era. The finding comes from the phenomenon which found after the field research and analyzed using the phenomenology approach of Merleau Ponty, Juhani Pallasmaa, and Steven Holl. Phenomenology allows people to express their existence through architecture and let its value appear to people as they experience it. The result showed that experiences would give the people have an attachment to the place unconsciously.
