The gate is an important component of Peranakan houses in Lasem. They are included in the cultural heritage of Indonesia, and most of them are more than a hundred years old, but still stand firm and lined up neatly adorning the Pecinan area. The purpose of this paper is to provide a different perspective on the existence of the Peranakan houses’ gates that interpreted through the author’s experiences during the fieldwork. The gate embodiment gives a different atmosphere and experience which is not found elsewhere because they are unique and irreplaceable. Unfortunately, preserving these gates become a serious challenge in the modern era. The finding comes from the phenomenon which found after the field research and analyzed using the phenomenology approach of Merleau Ponty, Juhani Pallasmaa, and Steven Holl. Phenomenology allows people to express their existence through architecture and let its value appear to people as they experience it. The result showed that experiences would give the people have an attachment to the place unconsciously.
Abstract. Sundanese are the largest indigenous ethnic group in the western part of Java Island. Sundanese culture closely relates to Animist, Hindu-Buddhist, and Islam philosophies. It led to the unique creation of the Sundanese traditional houses called Rumah Adat in Kampung Naga where the ancient tradition from their ancestor were upheld until today. Kampung Naga was listed as one of the Sundanese traditional villages known as Kampung Adat in West Java. This village has its own characteristics which enable the conveyance of tremendous tradition from the past, since the reign of Padjajaran Kingdom to the present. Additionally, it has the ability to accelerate globalization of culture these days. The objectives of this paper are to reintroduce and observe the in-depth meaning of Sundanese traditional houses within Kampung Naga. This paper employed qualitative investigation with the support of exploratory literature review. The result of this study portrayed that Sundanese traditional village are depicted as sacred spaces when the founder, the belief, and the nature spirit are interrelated. Thus, the creation of traditional houses in Kampung Naga does not only serve as shelters, but it also has "breath", "soul" and may embody cosmological value. This paper is prominent in the documentation of Sundanese traditional buildings as one of cultural identity of Indonesia, which will deliver the cultural knowledge to the world wide.
Indirectly and unconsciously, globalisation era affects the changing of activities in dwellings that urge the owner to presents different features and requirements. That was challenging and become an internal problem of the owners or the heir of the house. Therefore, the preservation of Peranakan houses in Lasem becomes an urgent task. Rebuilding Space becomes an action by the homeowners as a form of preservation. This study aims can be simply stated. It is to understand which components could support the embodiment of "new places" within the main building of Peranakan house and to encourage the reader to think differently about the meanings of space. To answer the aims, the method began with a survey, interviews and observations by documenting tangible activities and spaces within the main building of the case study was a Peranakan house called Kidang Mas in Lasem, Central Java. The research discussion supported with one of trialectics concept called Perceived Space. The researcher found the reproduction of space was created together with the production of social space which originated from changes in private to public activities, and it was seen that space is not a mere place or container.
A narrative involves the process of telling all experiences related to culture and can form a new understanding of the object of research, so that a narrative affects the way people perceive historical buildings. The article focuses on narrating the historical building in Chinatown Peranakan houses in Chinatown, Lasem, intending to provide an overview of cultural acculturation, as well as the problems that occur in the Peranakan houses. This qualitative study is based on researcher’s experiences and exploratiory literature. Interview has been made and visual documentation has been taken during repeatedly observation start form December 2017 until December 2019. The discussion findings show that the Peranakan houses in Lasem have richness in cultural influence, such as Chinese, Javanese, and European, but unfortunately need serious attention from the owner, the surrounding community as well as the government. The houses are experienced being abandoned, destroyed, used on but suffer from over-decoration and are unfortunate in the event of exploitation. Thus the implementation of preservation and conservation properly should be carried out to avoid the shortage or even loss the identity.
Batik merupakan salah satu mahakarya Indonesia dan keberadaan batik telah diakui oleh seluruh dunia. UNESCO telah menetapkan batik sebagai warisan budaya Indonesia, yaitu sebagai Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity pada tanggal 2 oktober 2009. Batik memiliki banyak jenis corak dan makna di dalamnya dan motif Parang akan menjadi fokus pada artikel ini. Makna yang terkandung di dalam motif dapat menjadi inspirasi dan diterapkan didalam sebuah perancangan interior. Artikel kualitatif ini menggunakan pendekatan kajian budaya yang didukung dengan eksplorasi literatur. Penelitian ini memiliki kontribusi dalam memberikan ide dalam penerapan berbagai makna motif Parang ke dalam elemen ruang, selain itu memberikan pandangan bahwa batik bukan saja sehelai kain dekoratif, namun juga memiliki berbagai arti mendalam yang dapat menjadi identitas bangsa Indonesia.
