Penile Mondor’s disease

Abstract: Mondor’s disease is a rare, self-limiting, benign process with acute presentation characterized by subcutaneous bands in several parts of the body. Penile Mondor’s disease (PMD) is thrombophlebitis of the superficial dorsal vein of the penis. It is usually considered as thrombophlebitis or phlebitis of subcutaneous vessels. Some findings suggest that it might be of lymphatic origin. The chest, abdominal wall, penis, upper arm, and other parts of the body may also be involved by the disease. “…Vessel wall damage resulting from STIs has also been proposed; however, in a study of patients presenting to an STI clinic, it was unclear whether the presence of an STI was the causative factor or whether the patient’s sexual practices and behaviors, which exposed them to the STI, was the causative factor 4. Vessel wall damage caused by injection of intravenous drugs into the superficial vein of the penis has also been reported, as well as vessel wall damage caused by exercise 8,9…”

Management is generally medical with sexual activity restriction, anti‐inflammatory medications, and anticoagulation drugs (such as topical heparin) . Our patient was treated with anti‐inflammatory drugs (indomethacin 50 mg per os thrice a day) and topical heparin gel application twice a day.…”

“…It is mostly called Mondor's disease (MD) in honor of Henri Mondor who first described its clinical feature in 1939 [1]. Braun‐Falco described thrombosis in penile veins in 1955 and Helm and Hodge secondly reported it and located it in the penile superficial dorsal vein in 1958 [2]. In previous literature, different treatments for penile MD, from watchful waiting to surgery excision, can be found without consensus since it is a rare condition and only a series of single center cases were reported [2].…”

“…Penile MD is a rare and under‐recognized benign condition. It is recognized as acute onset induration with self‐limited course: the symptoms typically last from 6 to 8 weeks before completely resolving [2]. Nevertheless, patient's education is meaningful to relief their great anxiety.…”
