There is growing evidence that pre-Columbian humans had strong impacts on soils, plant and animal communities and ecosystem functioning in many parts of Amazonia, and that the legacies of these impacts still affect biodiversity and how ecosystems function today. Understanding the history of human/ environment interactions in Amazonia is essential for analyzing the current state of these interactions and imagining scenarios for the future. This study gives a brief overview of these themes.

“…Os abrigos seriam os locais em que não só os vestígios deveriam se ter preservado melhor, mas também as estratigrafias se teriam preservado e poderiam ser melhor observadas, estando os vestígios em posição original com mais frequência. Este aspecto da preservação da disposição espacial original dos vestígios -dizendo de outro modo, da preservação de sua estruturação -conectava-se a uma forte expectativa, marcante das pesquisas vinculadas à tradição arqueológica francesa, de que seria possível explorar sistematicamente as relações espaciais dos elementos, de modo a definir áreas de atividades, distinguir estruturas discretas (Prous et al, 1992;Vialou et al, 2017), além de controlar precisamente a inserção contextual, tanto estratigráfica quanto arqueológica, das amostras de carvão a serem datadas. No extremo norte de Minas Gerais (e também no Mato Grosso), a minúcia exibida por essa preocupação conduziu as escavações em um ritmo muito cadenciado, o que significou anos de trabalho escavando-se um mesmo sítio.…”

Resumo A proposta do presente artigo é explorar algumas das semelhanças e das dessemelhanças entre as ocupações centrobrasileiras da transição Pleistoceno-Holoceno e do Holoceno inicial e discutir nossa compreensão acerca dessas similaridades e diferenças, perguntando sobre as bases teóricas que dão e que poderiam dar sustentação a essa compreensão. O período enfocado é a faixa cronológica entre 11.000 e 9.000 anos antes do presente. São consideradosaqui diversos aspectos apresentados pelas pesquisadoras e pelos pesquisadores para as regiões da Serra da Capivara (no sudeste do Piauí), de Serranópolis (sudoeste de Goiás), do extremo norte de Minas Gerais (Vale do Peruaçu e regiãode Montalvânia) e do médio Tocantins (região do Vale do Rio Lajeado, da serra homônima e de arredores), áreas entre as quais parece haver, nesse período, significativas semelhanças, combinadas a diferenças. Após reunir alguns elementossobre essas áreas, com base na bibliografia disponível, teço comparações entre elas, considerando, sobretudo, os modos de relação com as rochas lascadas, os papéis dos sítios e o modo de estruturação do território. Ao final, compartilhoreflexões sobre os recursos teóricos com que usualmente comparamos contextos na Arqueologia brasileira, tentando ser sugestivo sobre outras possibilidades de repertório para fazê-lo.

The region of Lagoa Santa, Central-Eastern Brazil, provides an exceptional archeological record about Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene occupation of the Americas. Since the first interventions made by the Danish naturalist Peter Lund in the 19th century, hundreds of human skeletons have been exhumed in the region. These skeletons are complemented by a rich botanic, faunal, technological, and geomorphological archeological record. We explore here the contributions of Lagoa Santa material to the origins and lifestyle of early Americans, providing an historic background. Cranial morphology of Lagoa Santa skeletons allowed the proposition of a model of two biological components for the occupation of the Americas, in which early Americans are morphologically similar to people of African and Australo-Melanesian origin. Furthermore, the archeological record in the region has revealed an intense use of plant resources, a restricted spatial distribution, and the symbolic elaboration of local hunter-gatherers, unveiling a distinct lifestyle compared to early North American populations.
