“…Odours mediate orientation in Tritonia intermittent motivation to find conspecifics. Other gastropods are known to use pheromones (Peters, 1964;Audesirk, 1977;Levy et al, 1997;Chase, 2002;Susswein and Nagle, 2004), and thus we hypothesize that T. diomedea releases a pheromone before and during mating to attract conspecifics.…”

“…In Aplysia, the rhinophore epithelium was suggested to be chemoreceptive (Audesirk 1975;Emery and Audesirk 1978), and the function of the rhinophore as an olfactory organ was described by Audesirk and Audesirk (1977). Ablation of the rhinophores of Aplysia was shown to cause a decrease in the time spent for mating and the egg laying behaviour, suggesting the sensitivity of the rhinophores for pheromones (Levy et al 1997;Susswein and Nagle 2004;Cummins et al 2004). In a recent study using calcium-imaging techniques, Wertz et al (2006) showed that amino acids are detected and processed by the rhinophores of Aplysia punctata supporting their olfactory function.…”

“…Previously, Zatylny et al (2000) isolated a peptide from eggs of S. officinalis that stimulated contractions of the female genital tract. Although we do not know whether this compound is the same or related to the compound(s) that mediate VR rate and attraction in our study, it is likely that eggs contain a number of bioactive factors (Susswein and Nagle 2004) that stimulate different responses from cuttlefish.…”

“…Chemical attractants facilitate reproduction in many mollusks (Susswein and Nagle 2004), and cuttlefish are capable of chemoreception over a distance (Budelmann et al 1997). Here, we tested the hypothesis that Sepia officinalis eggs could provide a source of chemoattractants (Zatylny et al 2000).…”
