“…This is going with what had been reported in systemic review that the proportion of COVID-19 patients who were current smokers ranged from 0.0% to 18.0% (median 7.2%; nine studies) (Fu et al, 2020). Further, smoking is culturally not accepted in our region and is faced by a stigma in a conservative culture (Saravanan et al, 2019;Ayalon, 2019). “…One explanation for this gap may be low accessibility and availability in their living environment due to lack of infrastructure, incorrect choice of location and/or dispersion, lack of transportation, lack of ADCCs in the living area, and lack of information about the community services for older adults. The disparity may also be due to cultural issues such as stigma and negative views regarding the use of formal services for older adults in Arab-Israeli society [ 74 ], or because of the low preference of Arab family members to utilize the benefit of weekly hours allotted under LTCI on ADCCs and higher preference to utilize those hours on basic home care [ 4 ].…”

“…It also is important to note that the Arab population in Israel is characterised as a family‐oriented society, which often cares for its own, using informal resources (Khalaila & Litwin, ). Hence, attempts to rely on formal support could potentially represent a transition from traditional values to more modern perspectives (Ayalon, ; Ayalon, under review). Moreover, the majority of older adults and home care workers who participated in this study were women.…”

“…In evaluating the findings, it is important to note that the sample was drawn from the North of Israel and hence, largely consists of the Arab sector, which represents over 50% of the population in that region (The Israel Central Bureau of Statistics, ). The Arab sector represents a minority group in the country and its perceptions of the situation might be colored by the sociopolitical situation in Israel (Ayalon, ; Ayalon, under review). It also has a lower socioeconomic status and more traditional family values (Khalaila & Litwin, ), which should be taken into account when interpreting the findings.…”
