“…The results support Hypothesis 2a, showing that PYD (Wave 1) positively predicted LS (Wave 3). This is in line with the literature that psychological well-being and different indicators of PYD positively predicted their life satisfaction: one study showed that social support and self-esteem were important antecedents of satisfaction with life ( Chen et al, 2017 ); Howell et al (2013) found that meaning in life (a PYD quality) positively predicted satisfaction with life; Rey et al (2011) revealed that both emotional intelligence and self-esteem (PYD qualities) positively predicted satisfaction with life. As existing studies commonly focused on one to two PYD qualities in a single study, the present study’s focus on different dimensions of PYD qualities and adoption of longitudinal research method contributes to the existing literature by suggesting that PYD qualities are important precursor of satisfaction with life.…”

“…As a commonly used index of subjective well-being, life satisfaction is defined as a person’s overall cognitive evaluation of the quality of own life ( Gilman and Huebner, 2003 ). Studies showed that life satisfaction was influenced by both environmental and individual factors (e.g., McKnight et al, 2002 ), including PYD qualities such as emotional intelligence, self-esteem, self-efficacy, social competence, spirituality, and character strengths ( Huebner et al, 2004 ; Proctor et al, 2009 ; Rey et al, 2011 ; Howell et al, 2013 ; Chen et al, 2017 ). In addition, cross-sectional and longitudinal studies also revealed that PYD qualities positively predicted satisfaction with life among adolescents ( Sun and Shek, 2010 , 2013 ; Mohamad et al, 2014 ).…”

“…Increasing individuals perceived social support of individuals was increased, they can help them overcome negative emotions (such as fear and anxiety) caused by disasters and injuries [53][54][55]. Perceived social support can improve their self-efficacy [54], positively relate to social goal pursuit [56] and influence life satisfaction [57,58] and well-being [59,60]. Individuals with higher perceived social support are more likely to engage in group activities [61] and have a more robust group identification [62].…”

“…A lot of studies prove that possessing power can lead to higher self-esteem, and power can also enhance SWB (Wang, 2015 [30] ). Chena and Zhang (2017) [38] proved that perceived social support and self-esteem partially mediated the relationship between attachment and life satisfaction. Analogously, some studies set socialism as a mediator between self-esteem and SWB, hence social support contributes to get more self-esteem, and then enhance the level of well-being (Li, 2013 [18] ).…”

“…Self-esteem tends to be a cognitive evaluation of the oneself, it refers to an individual's general sense of his or her value or worth (Rosenberg, 1979 [7] ). Present researches focus on social network, attachment, depressive system and the measurement invariance of self-esteem scale (Lee, 2016 [34] , Liu and Zhou, 2017 [35] , Han, 2017 [36] , Salerno, 2017 [37] , Chena and Zhang, 2017 [38] ) without further research on the individual's emotion and improvement. Bandura's self-efficacy theory proposes that self-efficacy is a person's belief in their capacities to perform in certain ways that urge them to control over events and affect their lives, and self-efficacy indicates the amount of behavioral improvement (Bandura, 1977 [8] ).…”
