Perceived stress, disturbed sleep, and cognitive impairments in patients with work-related stress complaints: a longitudinal study

Abstract: Patients on sick leave due to work-related stress often present with cognitive impairments as well as sleep disturbances. The aim of this longitudinal study was to examine the role of perceived stress and sleep disturbances in the longitudinal development in cognitive impairments in a group of patients with prolonged work-related stress (N = 60) during a period of 12 months following initial professional care-seeking. Objective cognitive impairments (neuropsychological tests) were measured on two occasions - a… Show more

“…However, 2854 HCWs belonging to the low-risk group complained of at least one evocative symptom, but only 0.52% of them were affected by COVID-19. Work-related stress seem to be widespread among medical practitioners and in other working settings ( De Sio et al, 2020 , Bulduk, 2019 , Eskildsen et al, 2017 , Li et al, 2016 ), it also has increased during the pandemic in COVID-19 hospitals ( Blake et al 2020 ); therefore it is possible to presume that the high prevalence of symptoms could be also linked to this mental condition. Work-related stress not only affects the physician's mental and physical well-being, but also patient care quality and the overall efficiency of the healthcare system.…”

“…These core symptoms, combined with secondary symptoms (depressive mood and stress symptoms), will ultimately lead to inefficacy. The addition of cognitive loss of control to the definition of burnout is understandable since many individuals with burnout report difficulties in their cognitive performance such as concentration and memory disturbances [5][6][7][8].…”

“…As a global measure of perceived stress, we used the 10-item version of the Perceived Stress Scale, PSS (45). The PSS demonstrated good reliability (Cronbach alpha = .84-.86) (45,46) and has been used as a sensitive measure to track perceived stress in longitudinal studies [e.g., (34,47,48)]. The validation of the German translation (N = 2,463) of the PSS-10 has shown, in line with previous research, strong positive correlations with depression, anxiety, fatigue, and negative correlations with life satisfaction (46).…”
