Perception‐based Supplier Attributes and Performance Implications: A Multimethod Exploratory Study

Abstract: Attributes of suppliers such as capabilities are considered important aspects of successful buyer–supplier relationships. Previous research relates supplier attributes largely to intraorganizational supply chain practices, such as supplier selection and evaluation, and assumes that supplier attributes can be objectively assessed independently of the relationships with suppliers. This study expands on this literature by (1) exploring supplier attributes as perceived by purchasing managers in ongoing buyer–suppl… Show more

“…This design is the best when a researcher wants to test a measure or instrument when it is already not available. When the results are generalized for population, this method is highly applicable to explore the phenomenon in depth (Clauss & Tangpong, 2019). “…None of the recent literature reviews on supplier selection mention management skills or capabilities as an important assessment category (Govindan, Rajendran, Sarkis, & Murugesan, 2015; Ho et al, 2010; Huang & Keskar, 2007; Wetzstein, Hartmann, Benton, & Hohenstein, 2016). However, research shows that purchasing managers might consider such attributes when assessing ongoing relationships (Clauss & Tangpong, 2019). A proper assessment of the skills of the startup’s management team might be even more important for buying firms, because compared to VCs, they cannot simply replace the management team if they are not satisfied with its performance (Bruton, Fried, & Hisrich, 1997).…”
