This article intends to define sensorial discourses, to discuss the way they should be analyzed by stressing the importance of corpora. Putting these thoughts into the context of the digital revolution, it will show how corpora should evolve in the digital humanities. The association of digital and sensorial discourses needs to be clarified and this paper proposes a way to find new approaches to better analyze them.

This research note aims at presenting an overview of the field of sensory discourses. Important publications and recent publications are discussed in order to define the sensory part in these discourses. I then advocate that only a functional-cognitive approach is able to cope with the density and the variety of cognitive phenomena activated in the production/reception of these discourses. The last part of this contribution is dedicated to the exploration of the future evolution of the field. I especially pledge that (i) a multimodal and/or multisensorial perspective, and (ii) an interdisciplinary framework are more than necessary in the enterprise of observing sensory discourses.

L’article s’intéresse à un projet collectif mené depuis plusieurs années par une équipe pluridisciplinaire et ayant donné lieu à trois éditions d’écoles d’été sur le thème des « politiques des ambiances urbaines ». La démarche de l’école d’été consiste à collecter des matériaux audiovisuels permettant de problématiser un aspect de la ville dans laquelle est organisée l’école d’été, tour à tour en France et en Belgique. Les auteur·es mènent une analyse réflexive de cette expérience selon trois axes de problématisation : l’auctorialité reconnue aux résultats de l’enquête de terrain ; la formalisation sur laquelle elle repose en bonne part ; le pouvoir d’interpellation qui lui est prêté en réception. Il apparaît que l’objectif d’une sémiotique de terrain n’est pas tant de décrire ni même de révéler efficacement les régimes de sens qui structurent un environnement, que de faire porter ces effets critiques autant sur le terrain de l’enquête que sur l’enquête elle-même comme terrain.
