Perception of Affordances for Dribbling in Soccer: Exploring Children as Architects of Skill Development Opportunity

Abstract: This study examined affordance perception for soccer dribbling using a mixed-methods approach in male grassroots soccer players. We examined how children construct and perceive skills practices for dribbling in soccer. Fourteen boys aged 10–11 years (Mean ± SD = 10.8 ± 0.4 years) who were regularly engaged in grassroots soccer participated in the present study. Children were provided with ten soccer cones and asked to create their own soccer dribbling pattern that would enable them to maximise the number of to… Show more

“…That is, open-skill sports participants took slightly longer for their decision than closed-skill sports participants. Regardless of the simplicity of the task, the fact that open-skill sports participants possess distinctive decision-making abilities (Duncan et al 2022 ) may have also contributed to the results. Closed-skill sports participants, on the one hand, might have an advantage in reacting to congruent body and mental rotation directions.…”

“…This refers to technical, tactical, physical, and psychological components. Effective execution of movements at opportune moments is a primary focus (Duncan et al 2022 ). As a result, dance athletes may have an advantage in quickly reacting when the mental rotation stimulus matches their own body's motion direction, while they rotate themselves.…”

“…It is also important to consider how articles can be grounded or discussed through relevant models or theories (e.g., [19,20]). As a novel example, Kelly and colleagues [21] used the Personal Assets Framework to explain the immediate, short-term, and long-term developmental outcomes due to relative age effects in English male cricket.…”

“…Viewed from an ecological dynamics framework, a realistic balance beam task in VR potentially allows for taking into account the interacting motor, perceptual, cognitive, and affective features that can have an impact upon an individual child’s handling of task and environmental constraints. E.g., it is well known in the context of sports that relatively young children can extract salient cues relevant for maintaining their dynamic balance ( Peker et al, 2021 ; Duncan et al, 2022 ). Thus, different environmental situations and children’s perceptions of these environments can alter how they successfully achieve a gross motor task ( Golding et al, 2014 ).…”
