Los cuestionamientos de los consumidores en torno al bienestar animal han impulsado que los productores de huevo incursionen en sistemas alternativos. El objetivo de esta revisión fue describir las prácticas de alimentación y el bienestar animal de gallinas ponedoras en sistemas con acceso a pastoreo, así como el manejo forrajero y los costos de producción. Se consultaron 87 artículos científicos en bases de datos que se clasificaron en alimentación, comportamiento, características del área de pastoreo, bienestar animal y costos. Un sistema con acceso a pastoreo cuenta con un área externa al galpón cubierta de vegetación en la que las aves pueden estar durante al menos 6 h diarias durante todo el año, si las condiciones climáticas lo permiten. Estos sistemas tienen la necesidad de controlar y manejar las condiciones ambientales, las áreas de pastoreo, el bienestar animal, la sanidad de las aves y los costos de operación. La alimentación alcanza hasta 41% de los gastos, por lo que los productores desean sustituir parte de este con forrajes; con el agravante de que un exceso de forraje causa malnutrición, lo que afecta el bienestar animal y el rendimiento productivo de las mismas. Es fundamental que los empresarios de sistemas de producción de huevo con acceso a pastoreo conozcan el manejo adecuado de las aves y pasturas, con el fin de gestionar el sistema para garantizar la buena nutrición, la manifestación de comportamientos propios de la especie y la ausencia de estrés, miedo, dolor y enfermedad.

The term animal welfare is already known in Indonesia, but this technology has not been widely applied, especially in the chicken egg industry. Many factors constrain the application of animal welfare, but they are mostly hampered by the lack of knowledge about consumer perceptions of animal welfare and willingness to pay for eggs that apply animal welfare standards to their production technology. This study aimed to determine consumer perceptions of animal welfare, measure consumers’ willingness to pay for eggs that apply to animal welfare and identify the determining factors. We conducted a survey of 110 egg buyers using the convenience sampling method. Most egg buyers have a positive perception of cage-free (62.7 percent), outdoor access (78.1 percent), move freely (89.1 percent), nest egg (99.1 percent), and free feeding (84.5 percent) as a form of animal welfare treatment. Our data also showed that 76.4 egg buyers were willing to pay for the egg with animal welfare attributes 20.9 percent above the regular price. Using the PLSPM (Partial Least Squares Path Modelling), it was found that animal welfare treatments positively determine the willingness to pay. Willingness to pay was also determined by animal welfare applications which can improve egg quality and consumer satisfaction. This research implies that consumers will appreciate the application of animal welfare in egg production in Indonesia if animal welfare treatment is accompanied by an increase in egg quality.

Recently, interest in animal welfare has steadily increased, driven by a growing focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues. This trend aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. This underscores the importance of comprehending consumer attitudes towards products that are respectful to animal welfare. This research aims to employ the Value-Attitude-Behavior (VAB) model as a theoretical basis to explore the behavioral intentions of Taiwanese consumers to buy cage-free eggs. To provide comprehensive insights into consumer behavior in this domain, the study examines key variables such as ‘human–nature connectedness’, ‘trust in labels’, and ‘attitude towards animal welfare’. By addressing an existing research gap in the literature and exploring consumer behavior in relation to animal welfare-friendly products, the research contributes to an area that has received limited attention. We gathered a total of 341 valid questionnaires for this research. Employing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) along with Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE), we investigated the causal connections between variables. The study presents three key observations: First, consumers who value sustainability and ethics tend to maintain a positive perspective on free-range eggs. Second, a favorable stance towards cage-free eggs directly correlates with positive future behaviors. Lastly, label trustworthiness and a supportive view towards animal welfare heavily affect behavioral intentions in consumers. Given these insights and the growing significance of animal welfare in consumer choices, we recommend that participants in the food and livestock sector earnestly advocate for and back practices that prioritize animal well-being.
