Internet of Things (IoT) is an evolution of the Internet and has been gaining increased attention from researchers in both academic and industrial environments. Successive technological enhancements make the development of intelligent systems with a high capacity for communication and data collection possible, providing several opportunities for numerous IoT applications, particularly healthcare systems. Despite all the advantages, there are still several open issues that represent the main challenges for IoT, e.g., accessibility, portability, interoperability, information security, and privacy. IoT provides important characteristics to healthcare systems, such as availability, mobility, and scalability, that offer an architectural basis for numerous high technological healthcare applications, such as real-time patient monitoring, environmental and indoor quality monitoring, and ubiquitous and pervasive information access that benefits health professionals and patients. The constant scientific innovations make it possible to develop IoT devices through countless services for sensing, data fusing, and logging capabilities that lead to several advancements for enhanced living environments (ELEs). This paper reviews the current state of the art on IoT architectures for ELEs and healthcare systems, with a focus on the technologies, applications, challenges, opportunities, open-source platforms, and operating systems. Furthermore, this document synthesizes the existing body of knowledge and identifies common threads and gaps that open up new significant and challenging future research directions.

Telemonitoring provides a set of technologies that enables remote monitoring of patients with critical health conditions.Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN) technology has emerged as a major factor contributor to the need for ubiquitous healthcare.It provides a real-time telemonitoring system to treat several chronic diseases using wireless biosensors.The first standard to support communication between biosensors is IEEE 802.15 Task Groups 6 (TG6). The standard regulates the communication in,on or inside the human body for a short-range and low power wireless communications.IEEE 802.15.6 operates on a Medium Access Control (MAC) layer that supports several Physical (PHY) layers such as narrowband (NB),ultra-wideband (UWB),and human body communication (HBC).In this paper,a realtime telemonitoring system architecture for EEG brainwave emotion recognition is presented.The system aims to collect EEG data and forward them to clinicians in order to detect the evolution of the monitored diseases based on brain wave emotion analysis.Ensemble Learning techniques are used for decision making to discern the current health state of the patient.

Among numerous promising applications of wireless sensor networks is wireless body area networks. Wireless body area networks are used for real-time vital signs monitoring of patients in a remote setting. In addition to their dedicated sensing tasks, the implanted sensor nodes need to effectively utilize their resources to enhance the lifetime of the network. For wireless body area networks, IEEE 802.15.4 low data rate low-power wireless Personal Area Networks (PANs) standard is adopted. The said standard uses fixed superframe structure operation, which restricts the movement of the nodes, and has degraded performance in the mobility of nodes. Two superframe parameters, ie, beacon order and superframe order, decide the beacon interval and duty cycle of the standard. Both beacon order and superframe order have a strong impact on the performance of network parameters. In this research work, a dynamic swift association scheme is proposed to enhance the performance of a mobile node with a scenario where node moves from its parent PAN and joins the neighbor PAN. Dynamic swift association scheme is compared with IEEE 802.15.4 in terms of association time, association success rate, average throughput, and energy consumption. Simulation results using network simulator version 2 confirm superior performance of dynamic swift association scheme against IEEE 802.15.4 standard.
