“…Compared with female patients who attended the general Gynaecologic clinic at Siriraj Hospital using the same Pap smear technique, our participants had approximately 16 times higher the prevalence of LSIL+ (16.3% vs 1.1%) (Laiwejpithaya et al, 2009). In contrast, the prevalence appears to be compatible with that in an urban STD clinic in the United States (Shlay et al, 1998).…”

“…Low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL), a category of cervical cytology being classified by the Bethesda system 2001 (Solomon et al, 2002), is of paramount concern because it has high correlation with abnormal histology (Laiwejpithaya et al, 2009). The present study aims to study the abnormal cervical cytology in the immunocompetent Thai women presenting with AGWs.…”

“…In 2009, we reported the performance of our first year application of Siriraj-LBC in 25,510 specimens. Using the "direct-tovial" method and historical comparison with conventional Pap smear, we found that the Siriraj-LBC increased detection rate of abnormal cytology, improved specimen adequacy, and enhanced NPV without compromising PPV (Laiwejpithaya et al, 2009). Despites, the detection rate of Siriraj-LBC in our first year experience was still lower than that of other reports (Dupree et al, 1998;Papillo et al, 1998;Diaz-Rosario and Kabawat, 1999;Fremont-Smith et al, 2004).…”

“…Specimens were collected from posterior fornix, portio vaginalis and endocervix using a special plastic spatula (SL spatula) as described in our previous report (Laiwejpithaya et al, 2009). Immediately after cell collection, the spatula was manually broken at the scores locating at four cm from both ends of the spatula; the broken ends were put into a 30-mL plastic container filled with 10 mL of Siriraj liquid-based solution.…”
