Due to the observed increase of photovoltaic installations capacity in Poland, the research on the performance of different modules became an important issue from the practical and scientific point of view. This paper is intended to help system planners to choose photovoltaic modules and inverters taking into account the actual operating conditions. The study is devoted to the assessment of four different technologies of photovoltaic modules: polycrystalline silicon (pc-Si), amorphous silicon (a-Si), copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS), and cadmium telluride (CdTe). The data was collected at a solar plant located at high latitude location, in the eastern part of Poland, during the fourth year of the plant operation. The influence of irradiance on the temperature and efficiency of modules was studied. The results show that the efficiency of the pc-Si and CIGS modules decreases with rising temperature; however, the efficiency of the a-Si and CdTe modules is more stable. The impact of changing external conditions on the inverter efficiency as well as array and system losses during various seasons of the year was shown. The inverter efficiency reaches up to 98% in summer and drops as low as 30% in winter. Small average array capture losses of 7.41 (kWh/kWp)/month (0.25 h/day) are observed for the CIGS and 10.4 (kWh/kWp)/month (0.35 h/day) for pc-Si modules. The a-Si and CdTe array losses are higher, up to 2.83 h/day for CdTe in summer. The results indicate high annual energy yields of the pc-Si and CIGS modules, 1130 kWh/kWp and 1140 kWh/kWp, respectively. This research provided new data on pc-Si and especially the performance of the thin film modules and losses in a photovoltaic installation under temperate climate.

The world has witnessed a substantial upsurge in energy demand in the recent decades, which has concurrently led to increased environmental contamination due to the use of carbon-based fuels to meet this demand. The increased pollution levels across the globe combined with the rapid depletion of these carbon-based non-renewable sources of energy has forced nations to adopt cleaner sources such as solar energy, wind energy, biomass etc. for meeting energy requirements. Utilities and power transmission companies, in several countries, have begun installation and operation of large-scale solar energy projects in order to augment the present electricity generation capacity. India has a tremendous potential for solar energy as 58% of the total land area receives an average solar insolation above 5 kWh/m 2 /day, annually. However, PV installations require proper economic formulation and technical modelling of PV plants. The study presented in this paper investigates the feasibility of installing a 1 MW grid-connected PV system in the arid climatic conditions of India. Four different regions of the Thar Desert: Barmer, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, and Kalan Ghat have been considered for the study. A comparative study has been laid out based on energy yields, losses, and degradation of various module technologies namely Mono-Si, Poly-Si, CdTe, and CIS. The performance of the PV systems has been evaluated both in the fixed-tilt and variable-tilt configurations. Simulation results show that the daily yield in winter months ranges between 5.8 and 6.9 MWh/day whereas, during summer, it ranges between 5 and 7.1 MWh/day. The study suggests that CIS module is expected to produce highest annual energy yield of 2471 MWh with a PR of 86.1%, in the variable-tilt configuration for the Jaisalmer region. Annual energy loss due to temperature is expected to be highest for Mono-Si technology (14.4%) in the variable-tilt configuration and lowest for CIS technology (9.4%) in the fixed-tilt configuation. Moreover, mismatch losses for all the four technologies lie in the range of 0.1-1.1%.

Solar energy usage is thriving day by day. These solar panels are installed to absorb solar energy and produce electrical energy. As a result, the efficiency of solar panels depends on different environmental factors, namely, air temperature, dust (aerosols and accumulated dust), and solar incidence, and photovoltaic panel angles. The effects of real conditions factors on power and efficiency of photovoltaic panels are studied in this paper through testing the panel in real environmental tests. To study the mentioned parameters precisely, two panels with different angles are used. The case study is regarding a region of Tehran, Iran, in summer and winter seasons. The results show that panel efficiency during winter is higher than summer due to air temperature decrement. It is discovered that among air pollutants, Al and Fe have the most share in polluting the air that affect the photovoltaic efficiency. Moreover, measuring the accumulated dust on the panels shows more amount in winter in comparison with summer. The important point in studying the effect of tilt angle is that inconformity between solar incidence and photovoltaic panel angles would result in solar radiation absorption and eventually panel efficiency loss and also, photovoltaic panel installation angle would affect the amount of dust deposited on its surface.
