Performance Characteristics of Body Fluid Cytology Analysis of 344 380 Responses From the College of American Pathologists Interlaboratory Comparison Program in Nongynecologic Cytopathology

Abstract: - This study illustrates the challenges associated with interpreting body fluid cytology, particularly in pericardial fluid, and the factors that may affect accurate diagnoses. The results also highlight the value of using multiple preparation types in challenging cases.

“…Hence, it is imperative that the cytopathologist should be able to recognize the malignant cells accurately, identify the tumor type and if possible, suggest the primary site of origin of the tumor 1 . It is generally agreed that detection of malignant cells is much more difficult and challenging in effusions and body fluids than in other cytologic samples 2,3 . Sometimes it may be difficult to obtain a diagnosis on the basis of cytomorphology alone.…”

“…Although effusions can occur any time during the course of lymphoreticular malignancies (LRMs); involvement of effusions by lymphoreticular malignancies per se is relatively rare, with the reported incidence ranging from 3% to 30% among different studies in the literature 2‐6 . The literature on cytomorphological features of LRMs in effusion fluids is sparse.…”

“…Effusions can be caused by inflammatory, infectious, and benign; neoplastic or malignant; and primary or metastatic diseases. Such conditions in effusions may often have overlapping features and mimic one another both cytomorphologically and clinically, presenting diagnostic challenges [1].…”
